Lately I’ve been dreaming of the sea. Sandy shores, crashing waves, remote islands, sailing ships, misty horizons, salt spray and ocean breezes. These imaginings take the form of all types of visual daydreams. The way they have translated into my artwork is in the form of Nautical Flags re-imagined.
Nautical Flags are traditionally flown on ships to communicate messages. There is a flag for each letter in the alphabet. These artworks are not inspired by the design of the original nautical flags, rather they are a nod to color, shape and design as a form of communication. These are imagined flags created to continue that tradition through storytelling.
Each flag is painted with acrylic, gouache and emulsion on gorgeous handmade paper. Each gold frame is finished by hand to look vintage with an aged patina.
