Art in the home: Des Moines collector

Tina Ehrlich • July 13, 2021

We ship artwork all over the world on the daily, but it's always special to work with clients right next door. We connected with a local collector who has come back to the gallery again-and-again to expand her original art collection. Meet Lindsay from Des Moines, Iowa, and hear her "whys" behind buying art!

LL: Why is it important, to you, to have art in your space?

I just really love the tone and mood that art can set for a space, and makes it feel more homey. Like many people, I've been working from home for 15+ months, and feeling a little lonely or uninspired at times. It's especially nice to have calming or provocative work to zone out at during a Zoom call or conference call—letting my mind wander while staring at the intricate details of Elisa Sheehan's kintsugi eggshells, or overanalyzing the precision and shading of Laurie Lindqvist's diamond.

Elisa Sheehan artwork

LL: What drew you to Elisa Sheehan's artwork?

I love the 3D nature of her Kintsugi shells, and how unique it is. It seems so delicate yet enduring. I bought one piece as an anniversary gift for my (now) husband; we've been through a lot together, and I thought the principles behind Kintsugi was a good analogy for our relationship.

Angela Chrusciaki Blehm ribbon

LL: What drew you to Angela Chrusciaki Blehm's work?

It reminds me of a ribbon streamer—the movement and whimsical nature of it makes it an expected addition to an otherwise still room.

Laurie Lindqvist diamond

LL: What drew you to Laurie Lindqvist's work?

I loved the vivid colors and the crisp lines, and the optical illusion of a square canvas being a "diamond."

Hunt Slonem, Audrey 4, 12 x 10

LL: What would be in your ideal art collection? Or what artists are on your collector's "wish list"?

I like having art that represents the different experiences and phases I've gone through. And I want my collection to tell the story of who I am; I want someone to walk into my home and feel the same hospitality that I try to convey in person. I pine for a Hunt Slonem bunny, but I just haven't been able to make a decision. I also really want a lovely still life or floral scene but haven't found the right fit yet.
