What are three things you can't go a day without?

Besides my beautiful husband and my three boys, on a lesser, simpler note: coffee, exercise and a sweet treat at the end of the day.

When did you first consider yourself an artist?

As a child, I can remember saying that I was going to be an artist when I grew up. I can remember in middle school taking career tests and I would purposely try to skew my answers so that it would say I was meant for the “Arts and Humanities” cluster. I grew up as a dancer and would sketch and draw my dance company’s costumes to send off to our seamstress to create. At that time I though I would end up as a fashion designer, but life took me on other paths. I so feel like our true self will always lead us back to our calling and hearts passions if we allow it to.

How did you start creating art?

While I have been creating works of art throughout my life in various forms, it was not until 2012 when home on bed rest during my first pregnancy with twin girls that I began painting. Continuing to pursue art was a way for me to heal after that pregnancy ended in a tragic loss and it pushed me back to my authentic self. I realized just how precious life was and that I wasn’t going to waste it in an unfulfilling career. This new found love for painting ultimately led me to committing to art full time and leaving my job as a pediatric dental hygienist behind. I always say that something beautiful came out of something so tragic. My career as an artist is because of my beautiful daughters and they truly live on through my work

Where do you draw inspiration from?

I love for my art to reflect the times and the world currently around us. So, the overall composition of my work is deeply inspired by nature, life’s complexities, connection, community, finding a common ground, and making a way for us all to rise together. However, when it comes to color, I am often drawing inspiration for my palettes from interior design and fashion. As long as I can remember I’ve had an affinity for both. I’m fascinated by old trends becoming new again and the way design can influence the world around us.

What advice would you give yourself as a young artist?

Be kind to yourself and others. Follow your instincts and try not to second guess them. Always offer and seek support and encouragement from your peers—the artists who came before you and those who will come in after you. Do not be afraid to reach out and ask questions. I was too intimidates and insecure at first to reach out to those “big” artists I looked up to. Once I finally got the courage, I regretted not doing it sooner. It would have saved me a ton of time, energy, money and heartache. The connections and advice given from others has truly been invaluable in my career as an artist as well as has helped to create lifelong and unexpected friendships. I truly believe that we all rise together and there is room for everyone at table!
