Sydney is a newer artist here at the gallery, and we are so excited for you to get to know her a little bit better through a quick Q + A!

What are three things you cannot go a day without?

Going outside, coffee in the morning and looking at pretty things.

When did you first consider yourself an artist?

A few years ago. It took me a while to feel confident calling myself an artist. Looking back now, it feels silly not to!

When did you start creating?

When I was a child! I began to apprentice under my aunt who is a master seamstress starting at the age of 8. I was really lucky to have parents who recognized and encouraged my desire to be creative. My mom would let me paint my room whenever I had a new idea. We would always work on it together :)

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

I’m always trying to create something that replicates a specific feeling and so a lot of my inspiration comes from memories. I’m also always looking at ceramics, floral arrangements, interiors and furniture design :)

What advice would you give yourself as a young artist?

  • Don’t rush.

  • Pay attention and learn from artists who are further along in their careers.

  • Nothing is that serious!
