It’s an occupational hazard to look at practically any room, any magazine, any interior on a tv show and think about the artwork that I would place for that imaginary client. Recently I picked up a magazine for a furniture retailer and thought—my there are a lot of blank walls in this magazine. So I’ve decided to create a little series of blogposts called “#LetsAddArt” and I’ll pick on a random retailer and add artwork to their photography. Let’s start with
Pottery Barn
and try this, shall we?
Love the dark walls, side table and upholstered headboard they have going on here but #letsaddart. Art Tip: When you’re selecting a piece of artwork for above a piece furniture, like a bed, you want your artwork to be 75% the size of the piece it is above. For this, I chose a beautiful
Taelor Fisher
work that brings a bit of lavander into the room and pops off the black wall. Better, right?
Okay next up we are heading to a Dining Room.
Truly, this is a lovely scene but if we put up artwork instead of candles? Also, I totally understand it’s a styling trick for stylists to leave walls blank so that words and prices can go on a wall in a magazine—I’ve done it myself (although it kills me a little inside) when I have styled for magazines—but let’s put some art on that back wall too.
Okay, I’m obsessed with these two works together. The Logan Ledford
piece in the foreground gives the perfect pop of tonal color in the otherwise neutral room. The grays and taupes play beautifully together with the rug. The Elisa Sheehan
painted eggshell piece in the background works so nicely off of the Ledford piece. The circles keep some consistency in the artwork even though they are different artists and mediums. Also the pops of orange in both pieces are really cohesive. I’d actually love to see these two pieces go to the same home because they feel meant for one another.
Finally, we’ll take a look at a living room and breaking some art rules.
Well I’d definitely live in this room. The sofa looks comfortable, the architecture is stunning but where’s the art? Here’s a time I’d go for breaking an art rule. You could put two nails in either of the window moldings and hang this beautiful
Rebecca Stern
work so that it partially covers the windows. Is it risky? Sure but rules are meant to be broken—especially art rules. I think it looks fun to play with a small wall with windows but hang an oversized piece. The pop of caramel in the piece is so nice with the leather color and the rest of the subtle colors add both warmth and movement to this room design.
What do you think? I think these pieces add great energy to these beautiful Pottery Barn pieces. Their stylists and designers are clearly talented so it’s fun to add art by equally talented artists to add personality.
