NEICY FREY

Neicy Frey is a self-taught studio artist living in Spokane, WA. Her large-scale abstract and botanical paintings first come across as simple and bold; but upon looking closer, the viewer finds designs holding depth, dimension and complexity. Frey's process of building up numerous fine layers of oil paint, with small brushstrokes on the canvas, gives her paintings a luscious, velvety texture. Slight color from the underlying layers is sometimes revealed at the surface to lend interest and character.

Impressed with a myriad of visual influences during her childhood in South India and Malaysia, Frey draws from a reservoir of vibrant colors and traditional decorative motifs, as well as inspiration from the garden, to create her hard edge abstraction paintings.

"All of my influences, past and present, are distilled in to fields of color that I carefully arranged on the canvas. I like to create movement and drama with the composition to tell a story or hold a particular feeling."
